He says it's not "Put Me In Coach" which "Centerfield" is often called. Maybe you're thinking of "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley (and covered by some crap band a couple years ago). Just a suggestion as I know what it's like to hear a song and not know what it's called or who sings it.

It's called, "Centerfield" by John Fogerty. It was released in 1985. I used to call the radio station and request it all the time.
