it depends on the forum..

generally you'll get useful informations on whatever that forum is dedicated to.

the forums you want to watch out for...
are the Hate forums, Anti whatever forums... and such...
They will try very hard to persuade everyone that what they 'believe' is right.
..And I see people just dive right in without thinking it through..

Before joining a forum, be sure to check out a lot of the message threads and see what kind of people are regularly posting there. You want to be sure that the people are mature, intelligent, and not hateful.

Most forums just consist of people with nothing better to do and very little intelligent thought goes on in their threads. Also beware of forums full of "flame" posts with people just making fun of each other and stuff.

A good forum is very helpful because it can be a treasure trove of information for whatever topic the forum may be about. You also become acquainted with a small group of people that can serve to offer advice and assistance to problems you may have.

Advantage: answers! Bookmark for browsing!
Con: careful the "name" you choose (be totally "anonymous" and not associable with your real name, as your posts become searchable on the web)
