Bicycles, and they help promote exercise also. Be sure to oil your chain though.
Hybrid cars are a joke. They are over priced, and they are so small, they get better milage. The "Hybrid" Technology lets them use braking power to recharge batteries. If the batteries are fully charged, they do nothing. If you drive properly, don't tailgate and don't gun a car, you can get the same affect for $7,000 less.
Most cars use only a 12 volt battery, and are grounded to the frame, which is fairly safe. My home uses 120 and 240 volts, and has a safety ground to the earth. Cars cannot have a safety ground to the earth like a house can. Ford's Escape Hybrid uses a 330 volt battery. What do you think will happen when it shorts out or has a traffic accident?
Hydrogen power for the masses is decades away.
You may remember President Carter, when he was President, I read an article about his Presidential limo being dual powered, gasoline and hydrogen. You might look for that article.

Like in all cases the use of oil is blamed on the American publis, who pretty much has no other alternative. Anything invented that illimanates the use of oil, the patent is bought and the destroyed. Oil companies are hugh busniess and any threat against them can get you and your family destroyed. This is no joke, alternative fuel has been out there for ( I know personally for 30 years). We've sent space moduales into unknown galazy's in that time and you'll tell me a car can't be made that dosn't use oil and gas? I'm not that stupid. When the American public chooses a day to hit the gas stations and refuse payment then you'll see change. It's gonna take takeing, the same way we've been taken. Maybe I'll do that, wait the police is at my door for creating terrorism. Gotta go.

Higher fuel efficiency standards is the best way to immediately affect the amount of oil consumed in this country. Electric hybrids are only valuable if they are used primarily for short drives and in town. At highway speeds, your hybrid is running exactly the same way a normal gas combustion car is. We also must develop new technologies. Whether the answer is hydrogen fuel cells, ethanol (not necessarily from corn), or electric cars, we need to focus on research in this area. If the price of gas keeps climbing, free market forces will decrease our use of oil and the government will not need to make any changes or additional regulation.
If gas gets to $4.00 or 5.00/ gallon, watch what people will buy and how the auto companies respond. I guarantee you that the Hummer will not be a popular choice.

There is no plan. We will continue to use more oil as the world grows and other countries economies grow until one day there will be not enough oil left to go around and then we will return to a time of bicycles and riding horses to get around. Life will be terrible and we will all just have to get used to it. There is no one on the planet today that can come up with an economincally viable alternative to prise to the world away from its addiction on oil. Oil is the lifeblood of our civilisation without it, it will die out.

If pure (no gasoline) electric cars were allowed, or enabled, to compete on a level playing field with gas autos, change would make itself happen.
*
Very few people seem to know what is going on with electric cars today. Take a look at a modern electric car:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:
-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
it is a real car, being built right now for fleet use. PG&E is one of the customers. It's not alone either - there are , or will soon be many practical EVs for sale. Here's how to find one for as little as $5000:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car/
*
Electric cars use just a fraction of the energy, and make just a fraction of the pollution that gas cars do. And many EV owners will decide to add a solar panel to their garage, and drive for free.
*
But first, I invite you to join me, and buy an EV.

Nothing will change the dependence on oil and gasoline, except money.
Nothing else. Not pollution, not global warming. Only money.
Oil won't simply run out one day; first it will be come scarcer, and more expensive. As prices go higher and higher, oil use will decrease.
Money is the ONLY determinant. As a species, we are completely incapable of thinking our way out of the problem.
If you don't believe me, wait and see. My prediction is correct.

I can't help. I am opposed to any more governmental involvement. They are putting our businesses out of business.
Individuals need to take this upon themselves so we don't have to have any more governmental intrusions.
