yes the computer will be running slower because the OS will be taking up a lot of RAM and CPU. Your hardware is pretty good for Vista and i dont think you will really have any problems.. I would wait to put vista on until a SP1 comes out for it... there are a lot of hole that Microsoft is working on fixing. Windows Defender is an anti spyware software and in my opinion, works pretty good.. if you want to install vista, i would back up your computer before you install in case there are any problems with the install..

windows defender is just a firewall. You might want to check the compatibility of things like your printer: I had to buy a new one. Lexmark printers don't work well with vista even after you download the driver, but so far HP has done a good job.
Good anti-virus and spyware have been a bit hard to find. My ISP's online protection is not yet compatible with vista and I didn't like the other free one that I have tried.
Besides not being compatible with a few things, vista is pretty cool and a bit more user friendly than XP was.

DO NOT install Vista unless your ready to babysit your computer. I bought a computer preloaded with Vista premium in February and I've spent more time online and over the phone with Tech support people from the computer mfg and Microsoft than enjoying my computer. It's still not right. Like, simple things. Burning CDs is a problem. Wireless mouse problems. Really it's one thing after another. I would take Tim C's advice and wait till SP1.

Vista requires a minimum of 1 GIG (1024MB) of RAM to run. You can not upgrade to Vista unless you increase the RAM memory first.

i'd wait on vista till they get some more problems fixed.
if you erase winXP you'-ll have to reinstall your service provider and modem unless
vista saves those files if your just upgrading you might not have to

vista saves those files
