The Sacramento team was originally in Rochester, NY, then in the 50's they became the Cincinnati Royals, and were actually pretty good. By the mid 70's they moved to Kansas City and started calling themselves the Kings.

The franchise that would become the Sacramento Kings initially played in Rochester, New York, as the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League.

They began life as the Rochester Royals. Then they moved to Cincinnati as the Royals. Then they moved to Kansas City where the baseball team was already called the Royals and to make a name for themselves in their new city, they changed the name to Kings. They were splitting games in Omaha, Nebraska, and calling themselves the (mouthful) Kansas City/ Omaha Kings (dropped Omaha in 1975 but continued to play there until 78). Then they moved to Sacramento.
