Let's put it this way: Can you love a dead person?

I think almost everyone would agree that love doesn't necessary die when a person does. It can go on much longer... sometimes forever.

Since most of us cannot communicate with the dead, what is the difference between loving a dead person and loving a living one who doesn't reciprocate? Or even loving an imaginary person? I would say that there is practically no difference at all.

It is QUITE possible for love to exist when the object of your love does not actively love you back. Some would even say that it is the HIGHEST form of love!

Being in love is a personal situation. It is possible for two people to FALL in love with each other, but this has nothing to do with real and unconditional love. The second part of your question indicates that you don`t have a clue. Conscious love requires that all parts of your being agree about the decision to love. That means intellectually as well as emotionally and instinctively. Some people refer to this as the intellectual part of the emotional center. It becomes clear when you realize that we have times when we live in an intellectual way and that way really knows nothing about the other centers. There is more but that is the main ingredient.

I think there are different types of love and different degrees of love. Of course, you love your mother in different ways than you would love your partner, or a new song you heard on the radio. To be IN love with someone, it can be different between two people depending on how much they allow themselves to feel for the other person.

That depends on the kind of love being expressed. Phila, the love generally called brotherly love, can be shared or adorned. Eros, the love of desire, can also be expressed as lust, which we all know can be totally one sided at times. I suppose you can be deeply in lust with someone who doesn't love you back. Most people either don't know the difference or don't care. I have been guilty of lying to myself about being in true love or lust. People who through the L word around should really search themselves for their true feelings before speaking.

You can love with all your heart with someone who does not love you. but the love of the union can not be placed on one it has to be equal or it will fail.

Yes. Heinlein defined love as when the welfare of another is more important than your own. If you accept this definition (and I do), it follows that love may not and need not be reciprocated.

Of course.
If this happens loving them also means setting them free to where or whom they are in love or happy at.
This unconditional love, which always, never fails to fail.
