Take the computer and **your** XP installation CD back to the computer shop and tell them to do it right, and if they charge you anything extra you'll turn them in to the Better Business Bureau. And to Microsoft, since they're putting illegal XP installations on customers' machines.

The shop screwed up AND did you a big disservice when they put an illegal copy of XP on your computer. You need to put your foot down and make them fix it.

You can install your own copy of XP on your computer, but to do that you'll need to re-format the hard drive (which means you lose everything that's on there now). That's all the more reason for making the shop fix it, though ... they have the equipment to back up your files, and they need to be held accountable for their mistakes.

Oh, and once you get your computer back and everything's working again ... go ahead and turn 'em in to Microsoft anyway. That shop needs their wrist slapped (at the very least) for how they've been operating!

Good luck and give 'em hell!! :-)

Contact the repair shop that put the illegal copy of Windows XP Pro on your PC. Demand they either put you back on a legal copy of the software, or you will report them to Microsoft. The fine for distributing illegal software can run into the 100s of thousands of dollars.

If it is not working properly, (you if to press F1 meaning it is not properly configured in BIOS - and probably why the floppy does not work), require either they repair it, or refund your money for the work. If they refuse, file against them in small claims court. Usually just the cost of having to go to court will be more than what they owe you. Usually they will settle with you.

Then in the future take the computer elsewhere for repairs.

Before you can re-install XP Home, you'll need to uninstall Pro. To do this, open control panel, click add repair or remove programs, highlight Pro and click uninstall. Then, assuming you still have the disks, you should have no problem re-installing and registering your copy of XP Home.
Hope this helps.
Alternatively go to online help and support, where you'll be able tto download step by step instructions and print them out as a guide to the process.

I agree with Navigato's answer. Take your computer back to these so called repair people and demand that they put a "legal" copy of XP back on your machine. Also demand that they do "not" loose any of your data. And then turn them in to Microsoft. Do it today. If you need any help I'm sure that the local District Attorney will be more then happy to work with you.

It looks like you are going to have to put the XP Home cd in the cd rom and reboot. Boot from cd, then run setup and install it that way. You will want to back up any and all music, pics, movies etc that you want to keep... cause you will be formating the hard drive.

1. Sue your technician;
2. Get the original repair discs for your Windows (if you don't have them, call the guys wh you bought your 'puter from, and ask for a copy of it), format your drive C and install YOUR cop of Windows. It should recognise all hardware, including your floppy disk drive.
3. Find ANOTHER technician, preferably with references.

Turn them in to the software police:

send email to piracy@microsoft.com

Find a decent tech, (if you can, although that may be impossible), if you have data you can't afford to lose.

Sounds harsh, but these people who THINK they are computer techs, and charge people for stolen software and services really make me angry!

i agree with every one,,,even if u can install your own xp copy,,,you should turn them in anyway,,,this is why most software has gone up in price,,because some people do bad acts,,turn them in,,,and make sure they do it for freeeee !.
