The Sun angle is lower leading to less direct sunlight. For the northern hemisphere, the sun is at its lowest angle on Dec 21 when it is over the tropic of capricorn (tropic of cancer for southern hemisphere)

also because the sun is located near the tropic of capricorn, the days are shorter. less daylight means less time for the sun to heat the earth.

Put together that is why winter occures when it does

the sun angle is also the reason why a 25 degree temp in March feels warmer than it does in January (in sunlight)

Hi. As the Earth rotates on it's axis while revolving around the Sun, it tilts from the Equator latitude o degrees up to The Tropic of Cancer latitude 23.5 degrees North. Where the Sun is directly overhead. The Earth stops and starts to tilt down where the Sun crosses the Equator down to the Tropic of Capricorn latitude 23.5 degrees South where the Sun is directly overhead The tilting stops and starts to tilt up again to continue the process. That is why we have 4 seasons (Spring and Autumn when the Sun crosses the Equator)
(Summer and Winter when the son reaches theTropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn .When the Sun is farthest .
from the Equator it is known as the Summer and Winter Solstice. When the Sun is directly above the Equator it is known as the Equinox where daylight and night time hours are the same .
If you live in the Northen Hemisphere and the Earth tilts so the Sun is below the Equator It will be colder because of that angle and you will also have shorter daytime hours.
Cheers. I hope this helps you a bit.

1. The northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun in winter so less sunlight strikes the ground.

Because of the tilt of the earth on it's axis, that part is further from the sun, receiving less heat!
