I mean, set there for several hours with the plate in front of you and telling you that you could not get up until you ate it. You don't do that to your kids do you?

OMG,I think very possibly we grew up in the same household!!! My mom used to make us a separate dinner before Dad got home,so we could make our 7'o'clock bedtime, year round(we were in bed while the neighbor kids played Crockett on our front lawn!! because we had the biggest lawn, and we used to watch from the window!!)Anyway it was usually a fried hamburger patty, accompanied by canned spinach...YUCK.....mom said sit there til your finished.Yes over an hour would go by usually before I could try to coerce my golden retriever in to help me out!! Well guess what "Jingle" wasn't to found of canned spinach either,so low and behold Dad bought mom a garbage disposal, now the tricky part was,she was always in ear shot,so we would have to wait for her to go to the bathroom to get our spinach shoveled the only place it belonged, down the drain!!! I never and I mean never made my son eat anything he didn't like or finish his plate, because of this, however I don't blame my mom for her behavior because she was only doing what she thought was"right"(I think?)

Yep, I remember sitting at the dinner table all by myself with cold, over-cooked little pieces of steak and a puddle of ketchup on the plate in front of me. I can't remember though if I ever did finish it!

I don't ever do that to my kids. I do however make sure their food tastes good and I don't ever serve them more than they can eat. Sometimes they try to get out of eating part of their dinner and then they think that they'll get me to let them have something for dessert as soon as they get up.

Yes, yes, and yes. I hated to eat green vegetables especially after they got cold. I think the longest I sat at the table was for 4 hours. But here is the odd thing about that, now that I am an adult and a father of 3, I caught myself doing the exact same thing to my own children. What a vicious cycle.

Yessssssssss !!!! Oatmeal made me gag. I could not eat it. She would make me sit at the table until I ate it. If I wanted lunch I had to eat that cold oatmeal !!!! Until this day I don't know what I did to deserve it !!!! She use to make me sit in a chair in the middle of the kitchen floor for punishment !!! I don't know what I did to deserve that either !!! When I look back it seems like I spent my childhood in that kitchen chair !!!! My brother and sisters never had to do it !!!! Just me !!!! I have been back home 5 times in 33 years and she wonders why !!!! Oh well......... It made me a excellent mother !! I can thank her for that !!!

No my mom never made up set at the table because I refused to eat something. If I didn't like something she wouldn't force me to eat it. My mom was a good cook so I always liked what she cooked. I never forced my kids to sit up at the table when they refused to eat something either.

Yeah, one dinner I didn't want to eat the peas, so she said fine, took them away, and then I got up the next morning, and looked at what was for breakfast... and it was the peas I didn't eat from dinner last night. She told me to sit there and I couldn't move until I ate them, so I sat there... missed school... and finally at lunch time she gave up, and just threw them away. Hahah, I am a stubborn girl.
I don't have kids yet, but no I will not do that to my kids.

My mother didn't do it, I don't do, but my daughter does it to my grandkids, and I've come really close to giving her a beat down because of it. Last time, my granddaughter fell asleep with her head on the table, and I finally just went and picked her up and said to her mother "now what you gonna do?" That was the last time I "saw" her do it, but doesn't mean she doesn't. What really p*****d me off was it wasn't even about the food - it was "you're going to eat what I gave you to eat", a power play. Well - Grandma had the power that time.

No but I was a picky eater and my older sister told me that my mom and dad used to give me money and stuff to see my plate empty.
I don't have to do anything with my daughter now. She eats everything and she's only 2.

my mother never did but my aunt made me sit at the table what seemed for hours it got dark and I still refused to eat my greenbeans....then she smashed them in my face for not eating them.....I to this day can not eat green beans...and I never make my kids sit at the table until they finish if they are full then they are done...if they don't eat the veggies then no sweets for that day....but I would never treat my kids the way my aunt treated me...oh by the way I was 4!

OMG YES!!! When I was 6 years old she made beef stroganoff that was nasty. I didn't want to eat it and she made me sit at the table for 5 HOURS until I finished it.

And NO, I never did that to my kids.
