I've been asked to write a reference for a colleague. It's the first time I've needed to write one and don't know where to start! They've not asked any questions, just "please provide a reference for..."

Leave out the 'great human being' and 'wonderful person' stuff. Instead try to narrate a personal experience with the person that illustrates her strengths. Tell the story, don't just use glowing adjectives. Pick an attribute that will be enticing to a future employer, show humor, reliability, intelligence and judgement.

Use the job and person spec. and ensure that you provide information including evidence of impact the person has already displayed, against all sections. If these are not available, talk to your HT about responsibilities for the role. Emphasise positive but don't give false evidence. Personal qualities will separate like applicants so highlight these.

Bear in mind that the Head will automatically be asked for a reference as well!

Concentrate on subject knowledge, effectiveness in the classroom, discipline, relationship with pupils/students, reliability, readiness to help around the school - eg, will they help with crowd control at the school concert, willingness to help colleagues informally.

Give some examples of the persons best qualities in there job, also how they are dedicated to what they are doing. show how they are a helpful person and support teamwork, explain how the person relates with the pupils and that they get the full attension of the group. safe working practices? teaching methods?

Think of two or three positive qualties or things that you have seen the teacher do. Mention how they have helped you, how they have grown professionally.
