The 3p^5 row of the periodic below nitrogen. Alkali metals and earth metals fill the next S orbital with 1 and 2 electrons respectively, while boron through neon begin to fill the P orbitals. The transition metals only fill s and d orbitals. I think pretty much always the s fills before the d orbitals even though it's in a higher energy shell because it's actually lower in energy. So c) is clearly not it. If you notice manganese is 5 blocks over in the transition metals. This means it has 5 d electrons. Copper is a notable exception and with a config of [Ar] 3d^10 4s^1. It actually fills the higher energy d orbital and has 10 d electrons instead of the predicted 9 from counting. So anyway, a) cannot be correct because you would fill the 3d^5 first instead of 4d^5. b) definitely cannot be it because it 7 d electrons AND it didn't fill the 4s orbital first. Hope this helps and gl with chem
