.com = commerce; .org = organization. a .com site is a for profit site, while .org is a not-for-profit company.

.com = commercial
.org = non-profit organization
.mil = military
.edu = education institution
.gov = government
.net = network

Plus there are extensions for every country in the world, and states within many of those countries.

As no one enforces the use of the extensions, just because something as a ".com" or a ".org" does not mean it is what the extension claims. Often if the ".com" is already taken for a name, people use the ".something_else" instead.

.com addresses are (supposed to be) for commercial companies and .org are for organizations (churches, nonprofits etc)
