The USSR is often represented by a Bear, also by a hammer and sickle, and the color red. The US is often represented by the Bald Eagle, Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, and colors red white & blue.
The arms race was a big issue; the 2 countries developed nuclear missiles pointed at each other, with the aim of preventing each other from actually launching them.
On iconic moment was Nikita Khruschev pounding his shoe on the table at a UN meeting; a famous statement was "We will bury you."
The symbolic border between Soviet-influenced and Western-influenced countries was called the Iron Curtain. News from "behind the iron curtain" was strictly controlled by communist governments, as was travel in both directions. Although people did not generally starve under socialism, they did not have as high a standard of living as the West, so the socialist governments had to control their borders to prevent people from leaving. Also, religion was highly disapproved of in socialist countries, and persecuted to a greater or lesser extent. (A Soviet Cosmonaut in space reported that he looked all over up there, but didn't see God!) This is another reason people wanted to leave.
Then there was the Space Race. There was great consternation in the US when the Soviets put up the first satellite, Sputnik. The US rushed to put one up too, and named it Vanguard (a slam against the Communist Party, the Vanguard of the People). Amid great excitement the US Vanguard was launched, but it only went up about 15 feet before falling to earth. What a blow.
Later in the 1970s however, US astronauts and USSR cosmonauts met in space and shook hands, the cosmonaut saying, with his Russian accent, "How're Things?" Relations had become more civil.
Well, I hope this gives you some ideas.

Unlce Sam on one side of the Atlantic snarling at a Russian bear on the other side both with nuclear weapons in their hands as if they're ready to throw them at one another and the rest of the world cowering in fear. And make sure you put Mao in there with his thumb on 1 billion Chinese, and Ho Chi Minh tying up 500,000 American troops in Vietnam.
