Yes.
In the begining (1950's, 60's and 70's) labor unions were hot comodities among marxist insurgents. They thought they could get the people to take over manufacturing in the United States making the manufacturing industry more socialist. They were very wrong in their plans of conquest when corporations would just close their doors and reopen in another country.

There are some unions who had ridiculous demands upon employers. I remember reading about BF Goodrich in Akron, Ohio and their problems with their union. The union was preventing them from firing alchoholics and drug addicts even when safety was an issue. The union was also asking for outrageous medical benefits for their employees. BF Goodrich was forced to move to Florida to get out of the contract with the Union.

Another example is that for every Chevy car sold in the US $3,000 goes to Union employees. It was no wonder many chevy plants went south during the cold war.

I also know someone who works in an anti-union organization in Cleveland, Ohio because so many manufacturing jobs there have been lost to overseas. Right now Cleveland is in a state of decline.

NO. I am not by any part in favor of certian unions. For years labor unions were set up to protect jerk off companies from paying way to low wages, etc... The politcal side of unions is what destroyed the unions in turn destroyed the manufacturing. If it were kept simple like it was intended then it would have been fine, but since it got way out of control like everything else it destroyed manufacturing for the most part. Why not look at the people that forced workers to unite, aren't they the real culprits? If they had just been fair in the first place there would have been no need for a union. I believe that unions made americans lazy.

Nope. It takes two to tango, labor and management.

If management lacks the fortitude to stand up to labor, then the company gets what it deserves. The same thing works in reverse. If labor doesn't stand up to management, then the company will get what it deserves.

There are many different factors which led to the recession currently affecting manufacturing in the united states, Unions and Management were only a small part of the equation.

It can be blamed on both management and labor for the out sousing of some manufacturing jobs. Just look a the auto industry loss of leadership during the '70s and the junk that they produced.

Management was caught flat footed and labor had no vision either.

Yes, but not so much "destroyed" but allowed it to be moved to other countries where companies went for the cheaper labor. Unions raised wages and benefits so high that businesses which exist to make money (not to provide you and me jobs) were "forced" in a business decision to move manufacturing else where.

Unions are used to instill socialism in this country. And our idiot grandparents and great grandparents fell for it hook, line and sinker. People that join them are in fact the true enemies of the United states of America. just listen to them. Do they push "DEMOCRACY" or a "Constitutional Representative Republic"? The only way they survive is by getting the sheep of society through socialist(disguised as supposed "DEMOCRACY")public policy. Public Policy is not LAW. PPL also need to realize as well that Unions are in FACT "CORPORATIONS" as well. They can't deal with a flesh and blood human being, no matter what lies they may feed you. They have NEVER BEEN CHAMPIONS OF THE PEOPLE. They too have always been a CORPORATION. If you're a skilled tradesman and went through the apprenticeship programs. After which you tested out to journeyman status and passed. Did they record you as a journeyman by your name or your social security number? Wake up ppl. Union names says it all. And don't think for a second they are not DIRECTLY related to our current banking system. Again their names says it all. Independence is the only true way to go, that is if in fact you want to destroy our apathetic socialist society and return to the constitution. Nothing about them is constitutional. They want apathetic and dumb slaves as well, why do you think they support amnesty for illegal immigrants. It's not because they care about them. There just money to them(which is fake). Who's lying to who?
Also request that the corporation you currently do business with stop automatically deucting taxes from you and instead issue you a 1099 instead(word of advice: quit using your social security for everything and request a federal tax id number from the IRS.) If you're not educated enough to get out of a socialist welfare state, then lets just take it one step at a time. REMEMBER A CORPORATION CANNOT DO BUSINESS WITH A FLESH AND BLOOD HUMAN BEING. NO MATTER WHAT THEY TRIED SELLING YOU. People will help you. All you need to do is ask. Then you control your own destiny, not everyone else. Watch how fast monies start dying off to all republican and democratic candidates pushing for socialism. You will know which ones they are immediately. Put fear back into the government then destroy the federal reserve and IRS. Killing the UNIONS is one serious step to destroying socialism and exposing the rest of the sinister objectives formed tightly around our current fake money system. Socialism needs to be destroyed or freedom will be but a distant memory.

YES, now b/c of crying about not getting paid enough. These people wanted higher wages causing the cost of the final product to go up. Now there are a lot of "proud" union people sitting at home who can't afford the cheap stuff from China that they made when they had a job. Actually I think that it is both sad and funny at the same time.

I would agree that union labor was one of several factors.

There has to be a balance and unions must be willing to take the bad times with the good. Unions must be willing to take less money so the company can compete. It's just common sense.

I agree wholeheartedly. Labor is a commodity like any other commodity. When a corporation is forced to pay someone a compensation package worth $73/hour to put screw "A" into hole "B", they are going to look elsewhere to obtain that commodity at a more realistic cost.

With some reservations, yes. Without effective foreign competition, for instance, there'd still be manufacturing in the US, it's just that manufactured goods would be /really/ expensive.
