I started to swim last week. If I swim for about an hour/5 or 6 times a week, when will I start seeing results (tone/bulk up, broaden shoulders, etc.) ? and, how much should I be able to swim whithin an hour after one month of constant swimming (I have a good physical condition because I run every day)?

Three weeks and you should notice a difference in your body and metabolism. You won't bulk up from swimming and nothing broadens your shoulders. Shoulders are joints, they don't grow. You may see an increase in tone of the rhomboids, trapezius, and latissimus dorsi, which are the muscles that control the shoulder joint. You may also see strength gain in the rotator cuff grouping which are the muscles that attach the scapula to the humerus (shoulder blade to arm bone.)

How far you can swim in an hour is relative. How is your technique? What is your time for a 100? What stroke would you be swimming? How consistent are your times? Just for reference, the average 15 to18-year-old age group swimmer can swim 100 in under 1:00. A mile takes roughly 17:00 to 19:00. I am not sure of your age but you can always check out Master's Swimming (over 18s) http://www.usms.org or USA Swimming www.usaswimming.org for age-appropriate competitive times.

Running is good cardio but the only real way to train for swimming is by swimming. The body reacts very differently to a no-impact workout like swimming than to a high-impact workout such as running. Cross training is never a bad idea but to improve your swimming you must focus on technique and swim as much as possible.

Good luck!

You'll start seeing some results soon but you'll of course speed things up if you swim more. Maybe in another week or 2 you'll have definite results but since you already run I don't think the results will be that noticable since running is kind of like swimming in some ways.

But right off the bat you'll see effects on your metabolism and appetite. Also as you go on your lung capacity will start to increase as well.

As for the amount you should be swimming by the end of 1 month in an hour I'd say shoot for about 1,250 yards, maybe 1,000 if that's rough on you. In practice we swim an average of 3,000 yards a day in full season when we're not on taper and that's in 2 hours too. You should be very gradually increasing your swimming load if you want to get better like taking 5 seconds off your average 100 free practice interval. Also if you start pushing yourself harder you'll start seeing more results as well from the increased workload.
