Some of your installed programs might come with extra features that most users generally overlook. While the resource usage attributed to these programs are usually small, they can build up and begin to consume your vital system resources, which can lead to a slower computer. Here is how to stop those programs from running and free up your system resources.
Remove icons in the Startup folder. Go to START -> Programs -> Startup, and remove any unused icons that are located in this folder. To delete, right click on the icon and choose "Delete".
Open MSConfig. Go to START -> Run, and enter msconfig. Hit enter to start the program. The following window should appear:
Click on the 'Startup' tab. Here, you will see a list of programs that is similar to the one below:
Uncheck any programs that you do not want Windows to run at startup.
Click 'OK'. A new window will appear, asking you to restart your computer.
Click 'Restart'.
Tips
Certain programs such as qttask.exe [QuickTime Task Bar] and wkcalrem.exe [Microsoft Works Calendar Reminder] are non-essential processes and are safe to disable.
If you are unsure whether to leave a program running, it is best to leave it alone. Search for a file name on ProcessLibrary to see whether a particular startup process should or should not be removed.
If you are running Windows XP, you can safely disable all the startup programs. To do this, do one of the following: Click the Disable All button on the Startup Tab window, or on the General Tab window, unselect "Load Startup Items" check box. Now if your PC starts quicker and is running faster, then you can systematically restart one program at a time to find out which one of them is causing a problem.
Warnings
Some programs are essential to system stability, such as ctfmon.exe, cmd.exe, and svchost.exe. Do not disable these processes.

Hi, this is a small problem, but you need software to do this easily. Or you could do it the "hard" way.
msn, and yahoo messanger should have the option to start up when your computer starts up, you can turn it off in the options menu in the program. Also, go to start, all programs, and startup and delete the links you don't want to start up. Problem is some programs are annoying and can't be found in start up folder. In that case download a program to get rid of it from startup (ex, startup faster, system mechinic, xp tools, ....ect)
Hope it helps!

Check your startup folder to make sure there's nothing you don't need in there. Usually they are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
If you know a thing or two about Windows, you can try to poke into Start-Run then type in "msconfig" and then hit OK. But that is for experts only.
Finally, go into each of the MSN, Yahoo Messenger, etc. programs and check the program options in detail. They usually have a checkbox to let you run/not run the program when Windows starts.

I hear you, especially with Quicktime. You have to go into Edit>Preferences in each of the programs and uncheck the "start up in system tray" boxes or something like that.
But beware. There's a slew of other things that may be running in the background. Try hitting Ctrl Alt Delete and look at the task list and processes. This link should be helpful

If the reason you want to shut some of these down is because it's taking too long to start up, consider getting more RAM.

Depends on what version of Windows you use. Most versions can use 'msconfig' command in the run prompt to access a window with a startup tab. You can uncheck those programs that you want to stop at startup.
This doesn't work for Windows 2000, not sure why.

In YM & MSN goto their options menu.
There should be a blittle ticky box somewhere in the menus so that when it is ticked it WILL start when the system starts up and when it is not ticked the programs WON'T satrt on system start

Start button > Run > Type in: msconfig
In the window that opens go to the Start Up tab
You will see everything that loads when you start the computer.
Uncheck anything you do not need to start on load up (Usually you can uncheck them all)
If you change your mind, you can go back later and recheck them.
