You have collected exactly 2900 alumininum cans for recycling, each with a mass of 14.2g.
How much energy is needed to melt them if their initial temperature is 25.4 C? Assume the specific heat, the latent heat and the melting point of aluminum are 899 J/kgC, 3.97X10^5 J/kg, and 660.4C respectively. Answer in units of J.

The total mass is 2.9*14.2 kg
41.18 kg of al

the temperature diff from 25.4 to 660.4 times the specific heat times the mass is
(660.4-25.4)*899*41.18

=23.5 X10^6 J to get the cans to melting point

To melt
3.97X10^5*41.18 J
=16.3 x10^6 J

total of 39.8 x10^6 J

j
