Just wrapping up a divorce, I can tell you that that is not always true.
It varys from state to state. Here in California we have 'no fault' divorce which recognizes that, regardless of the reasons, some people just can not be married any more.
Children aside for a moment, the other assets are divided 50/50 unless there is a pre-nup. or assets which were brought INTO the marriage and never co-mingled.
Alimony is subjective, however, so here it becomes a matter of what has been the history and who has the most convincing lawyer. But, as an example, since my (ex) wife and I had both worked and had about the same salary and had shared the costs of the home pretty much, alimony was denied for her.
When there are KIDS the matter changes to give the Kids the best deal possible since they are the innocents who get hurt by the split. In Calif. there is a formula worked out based on the childs age, and the parents incomes. That sets the minimum.
Lets face it.. the whole process is painful and, in the long run, NOBODY wins.

Contrary to what many people on this site would have you believe - that is not the case. Everybody seems to have a story that supports that claim but unless you are a judge or a lawyer you really don't know what happened in a case. For example, lets say husband and wife meet in college. Wife works while husband goes to college and med school. Wife works while husband completes his residency. Wife works while husband purchases and starts up a practice. Long into the marriage husband starts to actually earn some money. In the meantime they have purchases a nice house, nice car, have some money put away, have some investments. Then they get divorced. Wife has been at the same job all these years and will never make much more than she is making now. Husband is earning 100,000 and his salary will likely triple during the course of his career. Wife will get no share of his future income even thought she supported him all those years he wasn't earning anything. Don't you think she should get a greater share of the current assets to make up for the future assets she is responsible for and will never see? Don't you also think that she should be entitled to some compensatory spousal support? You need to see all the facts in a case before you judge the outcome.

Honey, my ex husband wanted alimony, me to pay his insurance, half my inhertiance from my mom and half of everything. And he was the bum not working for the last 17 years. (He draws disability---yet he can ride a motorcycle across the US) He is a liar , a thief (lost two jobs for stealing) and a cheat. Thank goodness , I got some guts and proofed the adultry. I also had 6 notes he had forged my name to against our home. So, he did not get what he wanted. Only got half the house , his truck and motorcycle. No support, did not get any of my 401K.
I get his retirement when he did work a little when he dies.
You won't give it all away if you can prove they were jerks.

well that's not necesarily true depending on why they got divorced. I know that in most cases in which the man cheats the woman gets everything if there is no prenuptual agreement. You get alimony depending on the number of years you were married and how much you make. The woman takes the bigger half especially if she gets custody of the children. Other than that usually everything is spilt in half.

I wasn't aware that she did. I've been divorced twice and I didn't get "everything" or alimony either time.
Must just be where you live.

They don't. It depends on the distributions of assets, income, children, length of marriage, etc.
