The Civil War ruined the South. So many Southerners had joined the Confederate armies that agriculture suffered. The men were taken away from the fields. They were unable to produce enough food. For instance the Union armies devastated the Shenendoah Valley. The price of everything increased greatly. The Union blockade caused shortages of everything. As the war progressed economic conditions got worse and worse. The Confederate money decreased in value also. The war ended with the freeing of the slaves. The economy of the South was based on slavery and the production of cotton, tobacco and rice. Because of the Union blockade New Orleans, Charleston and other ports declined. They were unable to sell their cotton to England, France and other countries because of the blockade. The economy of the South was ruined. After the war the South was treated as a conquered nation. On the other hand the economy of the North prospered. It increased industrial production, especially for the state of Ohio. The North could dictate political solutions to the South. I hope this has been a help to you.

Washington D.C. was the capital of the Union and had been since Johns Adams administration. Although it a short distance from Washington to Richmond (the Confederate capital) neither was disrupted until the Union forces under Grant finally captured Richmond April 1, 1865, and Lee surrendered April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. When Gettysburg occurred July 1863, Lee was attempting to circle around north of Washington D.C. and capture it, but he never got any further than Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Lee returned to the South on July 4, 1863, and never invaded the North again. Even though Gettysburg was the turning point of the war Lee fought for another two years in the South. Lincoln never had to leave Washington D.C. during the war. Although he did visit some battlefields while fighting was still going on at the site where he was.

Are you joking? The impacts were huge and many. In fact, so many that you would need to read a BOOK to learn them all. Perhaps your TEXTBOOK would be a good start.
