When playing defense, getting all three putouts by striking out batters. Classically this should require only the first three batters ("three up, three down") but some people have relaxed this to mean any inning with three Ks, even if there's a grand slam mixed in. Kinda loses the essence that way, but there's not an official, fixed definition, so....

Baseball is the only sport in which the defense has the ball, so when a pitcher begins a new inning and retires the side on strike outs (not necessarily in order) it is known as striking out the side.

Striking out the side means you get all 3 outs of the inning by striking out 3 batters, It does not need to be 3 consecutive hitters. you just need to make all 3 outs through strikeouts.
