Say Lindstrom of the Redwings was hurt and couldn't play, do they give one of the alternate captains the "c" for the games he is gone? Or do they just keep the "A" on their jersey?

It depends on what the team wants to do. Most likely, one of the alternates would be designated as captain (possibly they'd decide it on a game-to-game basis), but still wear an A. The C generally won't go to another player unless the captain's going to be gone long-term.

It depends. The Red Wings would just have an extra player with an A. Lidstrom is not replaceable as captain in their eyes. Many teams would feel the same, but sometimes the coach will deem that someone else is a worthy captain and they will get the C, especially if the injury to the captain is long-term. It ultimately is at the coach's discretion.

The captain is decided before each game, and can't be changed during the game. So the Wings could change their captain at any time, whether it's by injury, trade, or they just decide on a new captain.
