Is this a general trend in solar equities, or more reflective of the general market?

The price has had a pretty steep rise in the last few months. I would call it a correction. The Wall Street Journal notes that there may be some MORE Chinese competitors launching soon with their IPOs, so that will dilute interest (Trina is Chinese: officed in Changzhou, Jiangsu). Still, for a company that just a few years ago made and sold aluminum siding, TSL has been a pretty sweet ride.

Alternative engergy stocks will take a long time to become mainstream and thus will have little upside for a long time.

It is the same as with Bio-tech companies, a good idea takes years and millions of dollars to try to get a drug to market, and if the drug is the only product in the "pipeline" then the chances of it and the company surviving is low.
