Well if you like math and science and are good at them, maybe consider engineering, since it is a very well-paid profession. And with engineering, you can always write in scientific journal and pursue your writing on the side. I was a freelance journalist in school while studying engineering, and I loved the surprised looks I got from people when I told them I was a writer and an engineer.

I was in the exact same position for most of my OU degree (on my final year now and have finally decided what I want to do!). The 'Prospects' site really helps students and graduates out. There is a whole host of evaluations taking into account your interests, your strengths and weaknesses, your hobbies and personality. It also goes through all fields of work and describes exactly what is involved so you don't choose a field of work or career just on its popular image as it were.
Also, check out a careers consultant at your place of study or independently. Good Luck!! As to your family not wanting you to study journalism why not collect all the objective realities regarding journalism and then present these to your family. Also state what other fields of work you can enter with a Journalism qualification. Hopefully this will sway them to your side, but remember this is your long term life we are talking about, so its time to make your own decisions.

If you want to write, then you'll find a way to write. What's wrong with majoring in engineering and having a minor in journalism?

Heck, if mom and dad are holding $ over your head. that's okay, Just take the journalism classes as elective for now. In the end it's your life and you can take out some student loans to pay the last little bit to finish you degree in journalism if you need to.

You have to do something that makes you happy, or ten years from now you'll have a family and be working, and going back to school to do something you love rather than something that you do to pay the bills.

If you like writing - you can still minor in journalism or English and major in business, computer science, etc... and become a technical writer or like myself background in medicine started writing research publications, then technical and now more fiction - the experience in learning how to write for specific audiences - scientific, trade oriented, general helped a lot - especially as my day job paid the bills - don't give up on your dream - just develop a better strategy - that deals with your family and still allows you to reach for your inner self

Read lots of sci-fi books. But get into IT or computers or something. If you learn early enough, you will always have something to fall back on in the future. You can write your own book once you read enough of them. I dunno about journalism, people say if you work hard at it and put your mind to it, you can do anything you want! But I think its a load of bull. Some things are just really hard to get into. Everyone can write a novel though. And There is a huge demand for IT assistants and what-not. 10 years from now, there will still be a great need.

Why does your family oppose Journalism? If you are good at it?

One person I would suggest you ask for some mentoring in this subject would be Pete Earley.

Pete started out at a small college. Worked first for a very small newspaper. Worked his way up wound up at the Washington Post and now writes investigative type books. He is highly thought of in journalism.

Just go to school and take classes that sound interesting. I changed my major six times and I currently am not even in the same field as my area of study. Don't stress out about it. Just go to school...I promise you it will all come together.

WHAT? Do what you love. You do not want to go the rest of YOUR life in misery because you are doing something your folks want. They are not going to be the ones working. Are they?
