You would think so, but....

In a scene that was cut from the movie, they were explaining to Chewy that they were gonna give him a medal. He felt that the rebel alliance was reneging on a previous promise to give him lots of crates of galactic currency so he and Han could pay off their debt to Jabba. Then they told him they were gonna give him a medal instead, and he said, "Arrrrroooooeeewwww," which, loosely translated, means "Medals? I don't need no stinkin' medals!"

In the scene where Luke and Han received the medals at the end, you heard him wail just before everyone began applauding. Loosely translated, that wail meant, "This $#it's for the birds!" as he expressed his extreme displeasure with the fact that Han and Luke decided to "settle" for medals instead of their promised reward.

thinking the super age of Wookie civilization and way of existence, besides simply by fact the Wookie code of ethics, I think of Chewbacca became down the furnish of a medal, the argument being, why could I settle for a advantages for doing some thing that needed to be carried out? Chewie's way previous that time of way of existence. it would be like accepting a advantages for telling the certainty, or assisting somebody up who had tripped, or pointing out a thank you to somebody who became misplaced.

I think it's deplorable how he was casted aside. If he took a razor to his coat and just looked like an ugly little human, he'd have a medal pinned to his chest.
