My current job situation is intolerable. I've been here 6 months and it's a really bad fit for me. The boss is a complete idiot. He has no common sense and doesn't make sense when he talks. Half the time I don't understand him - he has a thick southern accent. My co-workers & I aren't even sure how he got the job except that the hiring mgr at the time wanted someone they could push around.
I will be leaving before I get another job but I don't want to use this boss for a reference. Do I have to use him? Is it ok to explain to perspective employers that my last job was just a "bad fit"? How does one explain a recent past job that they don't want to use for a reference?

I have thought about trying to make it work out here, because I think with a difference manager, things would be better. I just don't want to see this guy lose his job because I know he will have a hard time finding another one. He's one of those people that is book smart but has no common sense.
