Depending on what you mean i can give a few answers, physically it's the bodies fight or flight response, a reaction that you have been working on since birth.
Metaphorically living with the fear of heights and never looking over that ledge is so much worse then just jumping and seeing how far you fall before someone is there to catch you.

It is your fight or flight response. Basic human instanct wants you to run in the face of danger or to prepare yourself to fight. This is how humans got so far (survival of the fittest). So when something comes that causes you to jump, the jumping is just getting you ready for your next step (fighting or fleeing, or just realizing its nothing to be afraid of).

It's the body's immediate "fight or flight" response. You will notice that if you percieve an immediate threat to your safety, you will adopt a defensive stance without thinking about it. Adrenaline will start pumping as well which is why you shake when things have calmed down.

Instinctual reaction "Fight or Flight"...it's that initial boost of adrenalin you get. And thus, why some people are jumpier than others. Obviously if something scares you...you naturally want to get away from it.
