I am thinking most Americans are ignorant/naive enough about American history to not really know what a loyalist is. Not all are so thick though, so some might think I am a traitor to the founding fathers. What do you think?

Chris m and Stony, dont take yourself so seriously. I have served with British in Iraq and love them to no end. I was really just kidding as I once told one of them as a joke that I loved England and would hang the flag on my house if I didnt think I'd be labelled a loyalist and hanged. I knew they would get the joke due to past conversations, but was curious what people here would say.

you know what?? im sick of having to think about how other people will react if i do something.
i have British flags on my walls (but thats OK cos i live in England) but i have American flags on my walls too.
People see them and say that im a Bush supporter and that i want to do sexual things with him. ive also been called a murderer (i know- its ridiculus isn't it!)
but u know what? i love the USA. im PROUD to love the USA and if that means i fly and hang American flags on my walls i shall jolly well do it!

While it may depend on which area of the country you are in, the answer is generally a resounding "no, you will not be attacked for being a loyalist 'traitor'." Since the war is long over, there are no British "traitors," and the term "loyalist" has ceased to have any substantial meaning. You may hang any flag you choose--even the Iraq flag, if you wish--just as you may hang, for example, a French flag in England.
I would hazard that most Americans are in fact aware that we fought the British for our independence from the Crown, so I believe they, for the most part, know what you are referring to.
So yes, you have the right to hang the British flag, and also the right not to be attacked for it, by anyone--civilian or government.
Caveat: If you are in certain fiercely (so-called) "patriotic" towns, people may look at you funny, vandalize the flag or your property, or say mean things to you. I doubt they would attack you. But these would be individuals perpetrating this, and it is in no way representative of the nation.
The first answer summed it up: "who cares"...We simply do not care anymore about the politics of the Revolution; it's over, it's history, and it was a long time ago.

You would have been a loyalist to Great Britain, but not to the US. Loyalty has ALWAYS been in the eye of the beholder. It is not an education issue.
Do you just like insulting people?

Never underestimate the stupidity of the average American. I have serious doubt they would be able to find Britain on a map let alone know what their flag looks like.Asking them to know what it means is just going waaaaay too far.

If you did it during the time of the American revolution you would be tarred and feathered. Nowadays you can hang any kind of flag you want, except maybe a Nazi flag.

Why you don't REALLY far back in history, and hang an elk pelt, and claim to be a Viking-loyalist?

We won the war so I guess it's alright, but what would you do if some liberal nutcase came over and tried to burn it, how about the Confederate flag.
