Could have been any number of things actually. Most likely the goldfish was so mishandled before you got it that it died of previous abuse.

I have a male betta with around 4 other fish (2 mollies, 2 tetras) in my 10 gallon. Simply put, male or female bettas don't get along with fish that look like them because they mistake them for their own kind. Also, females tend to be less aggressive than males. You can actually house females together as long as you have more than 2 (a hierarchy has to form - if its just two females, one will constantly boss the other one around). I highly doubt if the culprit was your female betta. Although bettas have their own personalities, there's no reason why they'd attack a goldfish. On the other hand, it's just not smart to put a goldfish with a betta though. Bettas like warmer waters and are tropical fish, goldfish aren't. Most likely, the goldfish died because you won it at a festival. Festivals don't exactly put fish in their ideal conditions.
The second source I've listed answers your question.

MALE bettas are the aggressive ones, not too much the females. The container you had them in probably wasnt big enough. You said you had roots at the top? Was it in a vase? Contrary to popular belief, goldfish are actually very messy and create a lot of ammonia, requiring much more water than what is in a vase or a bowl. That is unhealthy for them. Especially with another fish in it. And an open air top is probably better, also contrary to popular belief, the betta-lily-vase thing isnt that great for the betta either. Both of the fish probably required a lot more space. If placed in a larger tank type set-up, they'd probably get along together fine(at room temp). Just like to add that yes, Myra is right ,even though she had to throw a little bit of a hissy about it, even male bettas can go with other fish, just not other male bettas.

The roots and stems really don't put oxygen in the water. That occurs thru the leaves. (That said a betta get oxygen from the surface of the water in any case.) It's possible the goldfish died of disease, lack of oxygen in the water, or poor water conditions. Betta, and goldfish make poor tank mates.
1)Temp!!! Goldfish need temps in the 65-72F range. Above 73 they will suffer oxygen deprivation leading to nerve damage, disease, and death. While betta need it in the 75-85F range. Below that they are lethargic, suffer from disease, and tend to die in a few months.
2)Goldfish are the worst sort of betta tankmate big, slow, and showy of fin. A small less showy fish stands a much better chance. Of course some betta are plain psycho. Lastly a full grown goldfish might decide to snack on the betta.
3)They need completely different foods. Betta need a meaty high protein diet, but goldfish need a lot of vegetable matter in their diet.

Female bettas are NOT that aggressive. Period. They are usually fairly easy to keep with other tropical fish, goldfish aren't tropical fish. Honestly, they should have been fine together if the goldfish was healthy before you put him in there.
Usually fair/festival goldfish are very mistreated and die within a week of winning them... So it probably wasn't your fault at all. You can get another goldfish at a petstore for less than 50cents... But I'd try putting it in a different container as the requirements for bettas and goldfish differ.
Good luck.

If it's a tiny tank, the goldfish could have suffocated to death. They need a lot of oxygen and a lot of space and are known for dying fast in the wrong conditions (which people blame on other things and then just get another one, instead of just giving the fish the proper tank size)

okay people... misconceptions everywhere.... yeah bettas are nicknamed fighting fish but that only holds true for bettas going with other bettas..... BETTAS CAN GO WITH OTHER FISH!!!!! i have had bettas in with gold fish, tetras, gouramis, barbs and even neons and the betta NEVER killed any of them.... get over the misconception about bettas...
and your goldfish could have died because it was in a bowl, and not an aquarium..... just because there is oxygen coming in from the plant roots doesnt mean its sufficient environment for a fish.... all fish should have a filtered tank if you expect them to live a longer healthier life.... bowls are too small for goldfish... they need a larger area since they are dirty fish and contaiminate the water quickly.... this is why filtration comes into play....

Goldfish don't do well in bowl. Period. They need bigger space and proper filteration. 10 gal per fish is standard.
Bettas will fight any fish with long tail because they assume that it's another betta. But i don't think that that is the cause of your goldfish death.

Betta are aggressive only to it's own kind, they usually dun even response to other fish, including Goldfishes.
I've kept my betta (only one pcs at any time) with my tank of goldfishes, and they live well.
So, Betta is certainly not the cause to the death of your goldfish.
Fishes bought from festival/carnival are usually pretty badly abused by many ppl's fishing them any or how. They could have even died of stress on the spot (worst case). If you can raise it for long period, you are pretty lucky!
Cheers.

No. Goldfish are freshwater fish. you are able to no longer feed that foodstuff on your Goldfish. basically and FYI, Marine means Saltwater. in case you have different fish that are seen Tropical then they are Freshwater Fish.
