I've only had to show the card when applying for a job, a drivers license, or a mortgage. If you lose your wallet, someone could apply for credit in your name with your drivers license and social security cards. I almost lost my wallet the other day, which is why I'm asking. I've already removed my social security card from my wallet in case it happens again, but I'm wondering if I'll ever need it outside of applying for a job or other events that are planned ahead of time.

Never. Memorize the number. Leave the card at home.
Ones employer will have to make a copy of ones S/S card for records. Only then does one carry ones S/S card.

P.S. Your assessment is correct.
