They used to be very similar, but recently their models seem to be quite different.

Well a few years back they were basically the same car, as RR owned Bentley. The Bentley Arnage is from this era, a true British classic. Then the company was sold to VW, except the RR name, which was sold to BMW.

So, a modern RR is mostly BMW 7 Series v12 mechanicals with a RR body. Big and imposing as a Lincoln Town Car, not bad at all.

VW took Bentley down another route. The Bentley Continental is Audi A8 mechanicals with a W12 (yes that is correct, a W12, not a v12) and shares mechanical with the VW Phaeton and Audi A8. Not bad either.

The Bentley Continental (and it's 4 door cousin, the Flying Spur) strike me as cars you drive yourself. Sized more like normal cars. The RR looks more like the kind of car where the owner is driven somewhere.

Of course, the Bentley Arnage lives on if you want the last of the old school real thing.

That said, I think a Maserati Quadroporte offers all the same exotic style and costs $50K-250K less.

And a Jaguar XJ8L costs $30K less than the Maserati, while offering the timeless British elegance that the RR and Bentley can only hope to mimic now under their German masters. (yes, I know Jag is owned by Ford, but they still do their own engines and platforms and bodies)

Neither. I'd rather go with the Mercedes Maybach. There is no substitute for supreme German engineering.
