I am 13 weeks pregnant. The doctor gave me folic acid to take everyday for 6-7 months. I live in Spain and in England they onlt tell you to take it for the first 3 months. I was really good and took it everyday for the first month then |I got severe tonsilitis and couldn't take it. Now I seem to keep forgetting (im forgetting everything these days). Am I damaging my baby by not taking it everyday at this stage?

It's most important during the first few weeks of your pregnancy, when most women dont even know they are pregnant yet. This is why it's suggested that you start taking it before you try to get pregnant. Folic acid is needed in the development of the neuro tube and help prevents spinabifida and other neuro tube defects. The 2nd and 3rd trimester it is still good, but not anywhere near as needed as in the first trimester. It's found in prenatal vitamins wheich should be taking the entire time you are pregnant and nursing/

I'm glad that you were very diligent about taking it for a month. Folic acid is very important for brain devolpment. I know, pregnancy makes you pretty flaky. So, when you remember to take it, take it. And, when you don't, try not to feel guilty. I'm sure you will have a wonderful, healthy baby. Good luck!!!

Folic acid is very important. They give it to you to help prevent birth defects. You can find folic acid in certain foods as well. If you cannot take the supplement, find out what foods you can eat to help balance the void. It is extremely important if you are over 35 years old.

You're not damaging your baby by not taking it especially since u've taken it for some time. But U'll be doing urself and the little one a world of good if u could try to take it everyday till u deliver. Just keep it where U'll see it all the time, say, on the dining table or on your dressing table, in this way, u wont need to stress urself to remember.
Goodluck

It's only important the three months before, and the three months after you get pregnant.

"Folic acid works, but it only works if taken before and during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when the neural tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord"
