Because it requires effort, and they have no energy or drive to take care of any necessities that they can get out of doing somehow. So, there can be piles of plates and such, and rather than washing them, one will allow them to accumulate, grow mold, smell bad, and will buy fast foods or get take away rather than clean up after themselves. It's pretty disgusting, but they are really feeling low and have an "I really don't care" attitude. It is very sad.

I know a person who actually threw out all of her dirty dishes, just keeping two plates and two forks! = D She said that she just couldn't face ANOTHER PILE OF DIRTY DISHES!! Quite a solution, eh?

It is just sooo constant...an every day thing...and no fun!

I put earphones in and listen to music or a book-on-tape. This helps a lot. I sometimes just rinse and stack and wait until I'm 'in the mood'.

"Ruts" often make us turn away from our least favorite task. It is really important to build and incentive into your life to do these tiresome jobs. It could be a treat for yourself when task is accomplished...a bowl of ice cream, taking a drive to buy something, reading or listening to the next chapter in a book. sitting down to write YA....be creative!

We ALL have ruts...it is soooooo human. My favorite line is "This too, shall pass".

It's unusual that you use the phrase 'in a rut' to apparently mean 'depressed'. Are you an American perchance? I've never heard that phrase used in such a way in Britain.

This is a kind of self-neglect which is common in depression, stress and anxiety: you break a lot of the normal patterns of behaviour, and can only expend energy when it's really needed.

I keep a stack of paper plates just in case :)

because it is a chore. people who are feeling down for whatever reason don't want to do chores. they need their spirits lifting, a change of scenery or to do something out of the ordinary to help get their self esteem back.
