Renting a bicycle is cheap and fun. depending on what kind of hotel you are in, you can be charged by the hour or by the day. It will run you anywhere between 300yen to 1000yen. Some hotels only charge a refundable security which you will get back when you return the bicycle. But in Japan, I have only heard of that happening. When I rented a bicycle, it was a true rental fee.

it really depends where you want to go. towns and cities in hokkaido are much further apart than the rest of japan, so it can take a while to get where you want to go. car rental is pretty expensive in japan (and don't expect a big car), many major highways are tolled and traffic signs aren't usually in English - only usually in the bigger cities.
bike rental would be cheap but depending on how long you want it for, it might be cheaper to just buy a bike (don't forget to register it with the police!) at a department store.

I would think renting a bicycle would be inexpensive, but car rental s are probably pretty high.
Hokkaido has a great train system as well as buses, so you can get to pretty much anywhere you want to go.

Just buy a bicycle at a discount store for 18000 yen and then give it away or whatever when you leave. Car rental is going to cost you at least about 6500 yen a day.

I think it would better to rent a bicycle... you can get some excercise and its easier to park.

Rent a bike, bikes are much more fun around there, but it can get sort of chilly sometimes.
