There is also a Native American legend of a great flood. I think that every culture has their own story of the flood. In this particular one: The natives saw a wave of water as tall as a mountain and there was a great flood but they escaped to higher land. The flood receded and then there was another similar flood soon after. One more time the water came, so they found a cedar tree, the biggest one in the forest and made a giant canoe and put a man, a woman, provisions and live animals onboard.
The story of Noah's Ark is just another one of these cultural variations.

It's not a theory; it's a story and there is a story of a person named Gilgamesh in Babylonian legend which parallels the story of Noah. No doubt it was handed down on the Jewish nation with new names and slightly altered details.
