Amy E, I liked this question because it is thoughtful and different from the types of questions that one often finds here. I guess my answer is : as many as it takes. They are only young for a short time and when you look back, this will be part of their magic.

I was babysitting my cousin a little while ago. She's 4. I tried to put her to bed at 7:45, and after 7 books, 2 drinks of water, 6 trips to the bathroom (3 for going to the bathroom, 2 to wash her hands, and 1 for brushing her teeth), an hour long game of 20 questions (with her response of "why?" to every answer), and 10 minutes of her telling me about her "super cool" day, I finally got the munchkin to go to sleep at like 10. haha.

My children brush their teeth, use the bathroom, get hug and kiss goodnight from their mom and dad,(I may read a book or not) and they go to bed. There is no more gettin up til the morining. If there ever was an attempt to try to play tht nonsense, it would be firmly put to a halt. Don't let yr children play you, set firm schedules in their beginning years. May be on Friday and Saturday nights, they may stay up a little later.

I grew up an orphan with only the trip to the bathroom. enjoy
what you are giving and getting in return, I only prayed for.
How wonderful it would have been to have someone to read
read me a story, to give me hugs and kisses, and be told you
are loved, to have a birthday cake, to have someone tell me I
am doing well in school. Anything just to be under a "wing."
Count your Blessings and it will all come back to you in
return. It was an "outlet" just to tell you this. I am now age 63.
