Sensible is right! There should be a wrench for the disposal, but if it is lost, a 1/4" allen wrench fits into the hole in the center on the bottom of the disposal. Try turning one way, then reverse it, until you clear the jam. You shouldn't have to disconnect the power to perform this. Just don't leave the tool in the hole, and try and start the disposal. If nothing happens, after you free the motor, press the reset button, located underneath the unit. Good luck!

You could use a broom handle to move the blades inside of the disposal. Sometimes this works by wiggling it around to unstick the caught item. If the blades move, then remove the handle and try the unit to see if it works. If not, then one can use a special metal tool provided with the disposer or most use a 1/4" Allen wrench to move the spinning rotors or blades inside of the disposer. This is done under the sink and the disposer should have a special receptacle on the outside of the disposer for the tool to fit into. Make sure electricity is off in both cases. Move the tool back an forth to get the unit unstuck. If you are unlucky and this does not work, you may have to call a plumber. Good luck...

There is a hex wrench that comes with your disposal that is usually attached to the side of the disposal in a clip somewhere. That wrench fits into a hole in the bottom of the disposal. Put the wrench in the hole and give it a twist in either direction about 90 degrees. This will manually turn the blades and dislodge whatever it is that is jambed in the blades. This will usually fix the problem. You then need to remove the wrench and turn the disposal on to make sure it works. Sometimes you have to repeat this a few times to clear it up.

Disconnect the power to the unit. Look on the bottom of the disposer and you should see a hexagon shaped hole. This is for an allen wrench to turn the blades manually. Turn the wrench back and forth until it turns freely.

Take the handle of a broom, and push down and turn with it at the same time. There is usually a reset switch at the part under the sink, hit it first and then try the broom thing

IFyou feel you have no other alternatives before
you have to buy a new one try this:
It worked for me quite a few times!
Put a long screwdriver on one of the
lower blades near the
lower part of disposal.
Angle it slightly.
Take a hammer and gently hit the
handle of the screwdriver until you feel
it unjam.

Sensible man has the answer, you shouldn't have to remove power, but it doesn't hurt.

Also, after it's clear, get a bunch of ice cubes and grind them up to clean it.

Take a hammer & put it butt first in, wedge it and twist. That should unstick the mechanism. Pull out the hammer then water & run. Ta Da!
