Do you call America the U.S, the U.S.A, or just America?

the USA is a multi named place
and all fit ( well at least the good names that is)
a lot of people I know in Europe say the states

I live in Australia, and I call it America...... but I remember being vehemently corrected by a friend who actually lived there for some years that it's the U.S, or the U.S.A.

It's usually referred to as America by most but some of us have actually cottoned on to the fact that it just a part of what is the Americas and we may actually offend some people, especially those living in Central and South America.

America for the country..

The Americas when referring to the continents..

Northern America for north USA, North America for the continent.

Southern America for south USA, South America for the continent.
