I want to get a new toilet and wondered if there was a standard distance from the wall for all toilets, or is the plumbing unique for each one. In other words can I take one out and put another in it's place without plumbing issues?

99.9% of all toilets are "12" rough" which means, that from the center of the drain pipe to the finish wall, the measurement is 12". They do make 10" and 14" toilets, but they are special order and not used very often. They also make and offset flange, to accommodate the 2" so you can use a standard toilet for any application.

There are two basic sizes of toilets. 10" and 12" rough. This is the masurement from the wall to the bolts that hold the toilet down to the floor. It is also the center of the drain hole.
