A type of breastplate is sometimes worn by officers and by military police (or equivalent). They are usually rather small and very ornamental.
Some body armour was worn by army engineers, especially during sieges.
I have not heard of body armour in use by US or CSA troops - although I may be wrong since there were many regiments of volunteers and some may have had breastplates issued to them initially. If so then a cavalry regiment (dragoons) sounds like a likely source.
Such a breastplate may also be from Mexico- some of the French cavalry troops serving there at that time used metal breastplates

I've never heard of one in the American Civil War... soldiers in other countries and cultures had them, but are you asking specifically abou the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR?
