A lot of it has to do with the media (commercials, magazines, movies and TV shows) that promote these fashions. I think women have become increasingly confident, and they feel it is their right to dress provocatively.
That being said, these fashions are also available in many stores (from low-cost to upscale). Therefore, women are simply purchasing what is available.
Like any fashion trend, this will pass in time and women will opt for a more demure and tasteful look.

The media has portrayed this as the right look for women, because society has made it that way, you will see 10 year old girls dressing like they're 18 and not exactly self-respecting to say the least. Really, it is just how our society has come to be. However, there do exist women who take pride in themselves and dress like they should be dressed...or my opinion of how they should be dressed....which is not like how you described.

there is a difference between dressing sexy and dressing slutty. girls seemed to get this confused a lot. if i wear a shirt skirt or low rise jeans i try and keep covered everything else. got to leave something to the imagination. if you show them everything when you first meet then theres no mystery left.

i guess TV is to blame. vanity now-a-days is above all. i as a 23 year female can tell you that "i dont know". i feel the "thong showing" look is horrible, tacky, and very slutty. some of these girls are looking for a night hook up? i dont know... what i do know and think its hilarious is that... when a guy tries to make a pass at them they get sooo offended!

I personally think to be sexy and class the trick is:
Either show leg or show shoulder/cleavage (moderately)
both is too much

They're trying to be sexy, But theres a difference between sexy and s.lu.t.t.y. Many people get that confused.You don't have to let everything hang out to be sexy.
I do wear low rise jeans though, but usually with polo.

That is the slu tty porn star look. Heaven forbid if you should look at them, even though everthing they have is exposed. Being female, I really never thought that looking like a hooker would be in vogue. Thank goodness we aren't all like that.

I would never dress like that. Class before trash.
Blame music videos - just LOOK at them (the girls). Blame magazines, tv and other media.

It's not all. But hey...if they got the body and don't mind the attention, more power to them. However, all too often it's chicks that don't have bodies made for these clothes that you see them squeezed into.
