A CRT style screen works because electrons fired from the back of the monitor hit the phosphor compounds on the front to make them luminescent. Two magnets (one vertical, one horizontal) in the monitor cause the path of the electrons to bend as each scan line of the image is drawn, so that the electrons can effectively hit every pixel of the screen.

Bringing a magnetic field (from the phone) near the screen then--not surprisingly--disrupts the normal operation of the monitor.

There is a magnet in the phone. You are risking messing up your computer screen if you keep it next to it for a long period of time.
