Right now....the first one that comes to mind would be....
SATISFACTION by the Stones - 1965...but I am also thinking of
JOHNNY B. GOOD by Chuck Berry and for me, the words ROCK AND ROLL would imply an uptempo song and not just ANY pop song...right?....and not ALL uptempo songs can act-ually be classified as ROCK AND ROLL, per se....
Well, what about ROCK AND ROLL IS
HERE TO STAY?....ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK.....What's that one by Queen??
A CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE.....??
Also like UPTOWN GIRL by Billy Joel, but I guess that's more pop than actual ROCK AND ROLL....oh well.....
Some will say LIGHT MY FIRE by the DOORS, I suppose....
And the perennial LOUIE LOUIE by the Kingsmen always comes up....
I am sorry...It's hard to say just ONE.....and I have not even gotten to the Beatles yet.....Their songs have always defied any kind of category even in the pop music world...They were all unique in their own way. Where do I start????
And then there's Elvis....the one who inspired John Lennon to even get into music in the first place.... Paul liked Little Richard and Buddy Holly....
For his songs, I would say HEARTBREAK HOTEL...and that IS actually the song that John heard back in Liverpool as he was growing up in the 50's that had such a profound effect on him and the Beatles have had, in music, the greatest effect of any rock and roll band or group - EVER....and so have the Stones, but not in the same way as the Beatles....They didn't inspire the absolute hysteria that the Beatles did when they first came to the States or got started in England...
They all had alot of great music that still stands far and above anything and everything that has come out since.....
How about WE WILL ROCK YOU by Queen??????
I luv TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART, but it's not rock and roll.....It's just a really good song....
What about the Beach Boys? They had alot of up tempo songs in the early and mid 60's.....
I should go put on the SOLID GOLD channel for Music Choice. I'm sure I could come up with the Best Rock and Roll Songs ever....

Paradise by the Dashboard Light.
Not really my favorite song but it's rockin, it changes tempo, it's a duet with a hot female singer, and Meatloaf tricked Phil (Scooter!) Rizzuto into doing the play-by-play and had no idea he was talking about sex.
