I went in for my first prenatal appt yesterday. I am 9 weeks pregnant today. The midwife that saw me said that it was probably too early to hear the heartbeat, but she said I might be farther along. She felt the top of my uterus a little higher than normal for 9 weeks. She put the dopplar on my belly and in less than a min, she found the heartbeat and it was strong and very clear. Is 9 wks too early to hear the heartbeat, or could I be farther along?

A doppler can pick up a heartbeat as early as 9 weeks, especially if you are pretty thin. Although, it is possible that you are a bit farther along.
I heard my baby's heartbeat at 11 weeks, which was a pleasant surprise to me since I always thought I would have to be at least 12-14 weeks.
Also, it could depend on the kind of doppler used. A 2 mhz model is better at picking it up then a 3 mhz model because the sound waves are more concentrated.
Congratulations!

According to the hospital I was at when I miscarried, a baby's heartbeat should be able to be picked up around 9 to 10 weeks- and I was 11 weeks, at the very least. Needless to say, they didn't hear anything and I did soon miscarry. But THIS TIME (I'm pregnant again, thank goodness, and it's been good so far) I'm scheduled to hear the heartbeat at 11 weeks and can't wait. I SAW the heart beating at 8 weeks on ultrasound but we didn't get a chance to hear it. So I'd say unless your Dr says you're farther along- which may be hard to determine until the baby is bigger- it's fairly normal at this point to hear a heartbeat.

My midwife was not able to hear my baby's heartbeat at 9 weeks, but it could have been just where the baby was positioned.

Sometimes they can hear it then and sometimes not, so it's not a good gauge of the baby's age or how far along you are.

Congratulations!

Actually they say the heartbeat is normally head by a doppler at 11 weeks so you might be a little further along than expected or else your baby is growing that little bit faster.

no, it's not too early. Here in India, they do the first sonogram at about 7 weeks and you can hear the heartbeat :)
