M & A stands for mergers and acquisitions.
In these days of global consolidation of business, when a company merges with another, or when a company acquires another, generally by mutual consent, then these activities are called mergers and acquisitions.
These involve a lot of background work to be done by both companies, and a fair amount of legal procedure is involved, including secret negotiations between the two companies, before the M & A are announced officially.
