You should add the female while he is still building the nest. Don't wait for him to give up on finding a female and stop building the nest.

The ehow website the vet lady suggested is very good, as is the bettatalk site. There are step by step instructions on both sites. Definitely read that and follow it as closely as you can.

You may need to breed them in a bigger tank than the one he is in because they chase each other around a lot and Betta tanks are usually 5 gallons or less. You did not mention how big yours was though so I am just guessing.
Remember to take the female out of the tank as soon as he is done with her because he will definitely not let her near the nest he should not stay too long after he has done his part either or he could eat the babies while trying to protect them. It is cute when he spits them into the nest. If the female is left in for a few minutes she will spit them to the male and he will take them to the nest to avoid letting her close to it.

You can put the female in right away but I would suggest keepting her tank touching his for a day or two before putting her in. Once she's in, watch carefully for fights. He should entice her up to the nest and eventually they will do a mating dance of sorts where he'll wrap himself around her and literally squeeze out the eggs. Once she is done laying them he will pick them up in his mouth and put them into the nest. At this point the female should be removed because the male will kill her to protect the eggs/fry. Be careful not to disturb the nest or the eggs will fall out. Once the fry hatch, feed them with fresh hatched brine shrimp or fry food and make sure to separate the males as soon as they show any signs of agression toward each other. You can keep females together. Good luck!
One other note..sometimes airstones cause the bubble nest to break up. If so it might be best to put yours at the far opposite side of the tank from the nest. I don't recommend turning it off unless you have a really good filtration system.

Please pay no attention to Jenna.. If you watch them closely they will not kill each other.. How big is the bubble nest? If it is a good size I would go ahead and place the female in and see what happens. Just watch them closely to make sure the female doesn't get hurt. And I agree with the other poster, you don't need 3 females. I love betta talk web site. I hope it will help you as much as it has helped me...

It could take up to 3 weeks for the betta to stop. This means if you wanted to breed bettas you could get 3 females and put them in with the betta, he'd pick one, kill the others, breed with the one, kill her and put her eggs in the bubble nest and raise the babies.

Yea, pretty brutal, but that's the way they do things; it's their way of life.

it does not take as long as the other poster said, and you do not need three females.
