Least Common Denominator.

If you want to add, for example, 1/2 and 1/3, you need to convert both to 6ths, because 6 is the LCD of 2 and 3.

1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6

The process is the same when there are variables in the denominator. The two denominators are x and 2, and the LCD of those two numbers is 2x.

If you wanted to add 9/x and 9/2, you'd have to convert both to 2x in the denominator:

9/x + 9/2 = 18/2x + 9x/2x = (18 + 9x)/2x

If the denominators were 6x^2 and 9x^3, the LCD would be 18x^3. (Because 18 is the LCD of 6 and 9, and x^3 is the highest degree of x.)

LCD is the Lowest Common Denominator. i think that they're assuming that x is something that makes the two numbers equal. in this case, it would probably be 1/2.
