If you are viewing a 4:3 picture fullscreen on a widescreen monitor then the picture is going to be stretched out sideways.

Look at you pictures in a window rather than fullscreen.

If they look stretched in a window, then make sure your resolution is set to the native resolution of the monitor. That will make everything look better.

Try adjusting the resolution on the monitor. Some work better for widescreen than others. I'd just try a few and look at them and see if any make them look better.

If you don't know how to do that:

Right click any blank area on the desktop.
Click Personalize
Click Display settings
Move the resolution slider to a new setting
Click Apply

Your monitor will flicker and re-adjust. If the picture looks better, then say "yes" if it asks you if you want to keep the settings. Otherwise, say "no" and try a new setting.

In most cases, partitioning a hard drive will either completely erase or at least corrupt your Windows OS and may be beyond repair, short of a full fresh install from a genuine Microsoft Windows DVD or USB. If done properly, you can partition a hard drive and keep your OS intact. The risks of making a fatal mistake are very high and even if you succeed you will end up with everything you already had on your laptop (including any viruses, etc). What you need here is a factory restore, best done from a set of restore discs on DVD or CD.

I have a cheap 17" widescreen monitor and run it 1440 x 900. I'm not saying that will be the resolution you need but it is the native resolution for my monitor.

you have to change the resolution of your desktop. Right click, properties, settings, tinker with the resolution to make the fix, im not sure what yours should be due to the wide screen.
