Read up on toxoplasmosis and don't empty the litter box without gloves. Tell your doctor about kitty and relax. Don't throw the cat outside - you can co-exist without any dramas.

Think about how many zillions of people do dopey things with alcohol and drugs before they even know they are pregnant, with no ill-effect. Why should you be unlucky just because you have a cat?

By the way, congratulations. Let us know in 30 weeks time what kind of beautiful baby you had.

You mainly need to worry about the cat liter. You cant change it or really be around it, and when the baby is born you need to make sure they cannot get into it. If your cat is behaved and does not claw and play that way than it should be fine with the baby. I had a cat for the last three months of the pregnancy and there weren't any problems. But as far as after i had my daughter my cat was really really curios and he was one that did claw so we had to get rid of it. But if you want to keep it and you don;t have those kinds of problems with your cat than the main thing you have to worry about is it getting in the crib at night, cats like to cuddle and it could get in there and suffocate the baby by sleeping on the baby's head. So you just need to think about how easy it will be to keep it out of the baby's room and if it is de-clawed (sp)or not. And if it is a cat that is really spoiled if it is obviously it will be jealous when you have the baby and it will try to be with you all the time and you cant have that when you have a little one and breastfeeding and stuff. I have seen a few people that could have cats and little ones so you just need to take precautions about the liter while you are preg, and also the baby when she starts crawling and the cat getting into the baby's room at night. hope this helps.

Dont panic, it is highly unlikely your cat has the disease you are worrying about and as long as you washed your hands and kept the litter tray clean there is no need to get stressed. Think logically, in the past hundreds of mums were exposed to all sorts of things that today we have discovered are potential hazards and poor countries manage in complete squalour.

Im not suggesting you ignore health warnings and you are bound to worry but remember hundreds of women fall pregnant without realising so don't know to stop eating and drinking certain foods in the first weeks, they do all sorts of things that are apparently no no's and are absolutely fine..

From now on get someone else to empty the litter tray and if you have to do it always use rubber gloves. Ring your vet explaining your concerns and ask if your cat should be checked and tell your GP & Midwife of your concerns so you are re-assured.

Of course your unborn child is your priority from hereon in but don't make rash decisions like parting with your little cat through fear as has been suggested on here. Get someone else to empty his litter tray EVERY day and keep area clean for you. At six months he can be neutered and is of an age where he can go out if your area is safe. Being summer he will be out a lot more which will mean you can gradually wean him off a litter tray. If he is an indoor cat find an approppriate area for his litter tray where he can find it easilly but where you do not have to encounter it too often and be tempted to empty it.

You have absolutely nothing to fear from your little cat just be sensible regarding hygiene. He certainly will not smother or attack your new baby. Obviously cats like to get into cosy places and lay close to warm spots so not good idea to let him get into babys crib but they do not smother babies. The only reason they scratch toddlers is because they get squeezed or pulled about by them. Its all common sense really.

Good luck, don't worry and enjoy every moment of your pregnancy and the new baby when it arrives:-)

I have a cat that has been indoors his whole life, Ive had him since i was 6 and now he's twelve. I'm 13 almost 14 weeks pregnant and everything is going fine with my pregnancy. they say u shouldn't change the litter box, but my cat has never had exposure to any kind of rodents or anything that would cause the disease in the cat. So you could take your cat to the vet and have him tested (the disease starts with a T, I dont know how to spell it)

Hi, I have 2 cats and im 10 weeks pregnant, there is nothing wrong with having a cat while you are pregnant as long as you dont come in contact with its faeces, Where gloves when emptying the litter tray (if you have one) and also wear gloves if you like gardening. Good luck !

Ummm..I am failing to see how being pregnant with a cat in your home can be a problem? Is the cat rabid? Does the cat smoke? Or is it prone to violent mood swings?

I gather you are talking about toxoplasmosis which can be caught by a pregnant mother through cat poo. There is a safe way to handle said stuff....read this webpage, it should help.

It's no problem to have a cat in the house during pregnancy, apart from your must NOT touch the litter tray. If you have to then thoroughly wash your hands afterwards.

Cat poo can be lethal to a pregnant woman as you can contract toxoplasmosis which can result in miscarriage or problems with the development of the feotus.

The main problem with a cat is clearing up the litter tray - when you are pregnant and with a young child. Best thing is to ask somebody else to clean the litter tray.

The litter box is the main concern when you are pregnant. If your cat is outside and doesn't have a litter box then you should be fine. Just wash your hands after you pet your cat.

I have had 2 cats through both pregnancys and I have been fine, the only thing harmful for you is coming into contact with their faeces, as long as you don't touch it you'll be fine... don't worry. If you have a litter tray and HAVE to clean it yourself then wear rubber gloves and wash hands thoroughly after..
