At 14, you're just starting to reach a rapid growth period in your life. Running can be very stressful on the knees, especially if you have a thick growth plate (which many adolescent boys do). Try taking up a lower impact exercise, such as biking or swimming, until your knees are more stable.

I know what it is you have (but can't think of the name right now & it is very common in boys your age) however, rest your knees until you haven't any more pain....that also means not tearing up and down stairs & if you ride a bike don't. Then start out slow.
Jog instead of run, slowly increasing your distances & your speed.

You may get more help from a chiropractor then a regular doctor. They can do a knee adjustment that helps. My son had the same problem at your age - its just one of those things that happen when you are in the midst of growing & it is temporary.

as a long time runner i can assure you the quality of your shoe makes allthe diff.. cheap shoes from WalMart will NOT cut it.. Go to a proper sports store andbuy propber running shoes (made for running only) from Nike or Addidas..have them check if your pronate or suponate (meaning do your feet lean in or out when your walk) this means alot to your knees if there is bad alignment..and take it easy to start every second day for a few weeks.... if the pain is really bad afte gettting new shoes ask the dr. for an xray to check that you dont have anything wrong with the joint structure intself.. have fun good luck

It's great you want to get in shape.
Often, when people first start out, they are too enthusiastic, and end up hurting themselves (like you have done).
Rather than throw yourself into running, instead walk for 30-45 min per day (brisk enough to pant and work up a sweat). You get the same cardio and weight loss benefits, but without the damage to your joints. Once your muscles and tendons get stronger (3-4 weeks of brisk walking) work up to jogging.
