Our girls school insist on a cardi or jumper from a company of their choice only, at a cost of £11 each. I had to darn the cuffs because I cant just nip to Tesco to buy two new ones for a fiver each. Surely this isnt legal?

I always thought that uniform was not manditory until the age of 11. Although I agree with uniform, but think it should be one you can buy anywhere ie, navy skirt/trousers, shirt and jumper/cardigan, not specialist makers. I think you have got a case with the uniform makers as goods have to be fit for purpose and if they fall apart after a few weeks they are clearly faulty.

This of course applies to state schools, private schools are much stricter.

Yes this is legal, however the schools usually have a pre owned shop where outgrown uniform is sold. This is how I managed to keep up with growing children.

I'm not going to say its illegal but i would of thought if you can get the same cardi somewhere else that's cheaper then they should let you buy it from there, they obviously don't understand that money doesn't grow on trees and the shops they have chose aren't exactly cheap.

You may also wish to make representation to the Board of Governors usually they are made up of parents like yourself and are responsible to setting uniform policy at the school.
